Short URLs are cool! Historically they became popular due to Twitter’s character count limit but today they’re relevant for shaving unnecessary bytes from the network payloads. Which is also why the old-style redirect short URLs no longer make sense.
That is why I prefer to remove the trailing slash from the permalink settings in WordPress (for new sites) and always manually curate the post permalinks to be concise.
